Pedestrian killed when driver suffers medical emergency in Pierre

Authorities say the driver suffered a seizure, left the roadway and struck a pedestrian.

PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA — One person was killed Friday morning in Pierre after being struck by a driver who was suffering a medical emergency.

Shortly after 9:45 a.m. Friday, March 1, first responders in Pierre were dispatched to the 600 block of North Euclid Avenue for a report of a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a 57-year-old man was driving a 2010 Dodge Caravan along Euclid Avenue when he suffered a seizure, lost consciousness and left the roadway. The vehicle struck a pedestrian and crashed into an apartment building.

The 60-year-old male pedestrian died as a result of the impact. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained no injuries. Additionally, no injuries were reported from the apartment building.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
