Insulins

What’s in an Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone created by your pancreas that controls the amount of glucose in your bloodstream at any given moment. It also helps store glucose in your liver, fat, and muscles. Finally, it regulates your body’s metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

What is the function of insulin?

Regulate blood sugar levels. After you eat, carbohydrates break down into glucose, a sugar that is the body’s primary source of energy. Glucose then enters the bloodstream.

Unresponsiveness

Unresponsive Diabetic patient (Diabetic Coma)

A diabetic coma results from either very high or very low blood glucose levels. This is a life-threatening complication that causes the patient to fall into a state of unconsciousness. The coma is reversible if treated immediately, but if left untreated they may receive permanent brain damage or potentially die

Symptoms
  • Increased thirst.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Fatigue.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Fruity breath odor.
  • A very dry mouth.

Diabetes Type

There are 4 types of diabetes

The most common types of diabetes are; type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes, and gestational

Which type of diabetes is the most serious?

Type 2 diabetes is a serious medical condition that often requires the use of anti-diabetic medication, or insulin to keep blood sugar levels under control. However, the development of type 2 diabetes and its side effects (complications) can be prevented if detected and treated at an early stage.

How do I know my diabetes type?

Blood tests used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes include fasting blood sugar, a hemoglobin A1C test, and a glucose tolerance test. The A1C test measures the average blood sugar level over the past few months. The glucose tolerance test measures blood sugar after a sugary drink is given.

Diabetes Shock

Diabetic shock occurs when blood sugar levels drop dangerously low. Diabetic shock is not a medical term, but people often use it to describe a state of severe hypoglycemia that requires another person’s help.

What are the signs of a diabetic shock?
  • Dizziness.
  • Irritability.
  • Moodiness or sudden changes in behavior.
  • Hunger.
  • Shakiness.
  • Sweating.
  • Rapid heartbeat

What is considered diabetic shock?

Diabetic shock – a state of severe hypoglycemia, or extremely low blood sugar – can be extremely serious among people suffering from diabetes, even those who are closely managing their blood sugar levels. Shock usually happens in patients with Type 2 diabetes
